TrueNAS Hardware

Posted on 2020-12-28 in Hardware

I run TrueNAS for network-attached storage. There are a number of sources for hardware recommendations: the offical guide, the community guide and the quick guide, among others. In addition, iXsystems makes its own line of TrueNAS Mini systems (see below). I modelled my own build after the TrueNAS Mini X as shown in the table below. Prices shown are those totals I paid locally in late 2020 before taxes.

Hardware Detective: TrueNAS Mini

Based on the teardown found in the Level1Techs forums, the TrueNAS Mini line appears to be based on Ablecom / Supermicro equipment, specifically:

Model Case Motherboard CPU
Mini E Ablecom CS-M50 Supermicro A2SDi-2C-HLN4F Intel Atom C3338
Mini X Ablecom CS-M55 Supermicro A2SDi-4C-HLN4F Intel Atom C3558
Mini X+ Ablecom CS-M55 Supermicro A2SDi-H-TF* Intel Atom C3758
Mini XL+ Ablecom CS-T80 Supermicro A2SDi-H-TF* Intel Atom C3758

* The Mini X+ and XL+ use an active cooler on the CPU. The 10GbE board is a Chelsio T520-SO-CR.

Supermicro sells the Ablecom CS-M50 with the FSP250-50LC power supply as the SuperChassis 721TQ-250B (now with a 350W power supply as the 721TQ-350B). As mentioned on the Level1Techs forums, the SATA DOM and RAM are likely to change according to availability. TrueNAS Minis come standard with Western Digital Red Plus drives.
