Vancouver ISPs

There are many choices for internet service providers (ISP) in Vancouver. Searching for Vancouver ISP recommendations on Reddit yields a number of recommendations for Novus and Lightspeed, among many others.

Lightspeed's website provides the following helpful table:

Speed Requirements

Note that the table maxes out at 25.0 Mbps for 4K streaming. When I first moved here, my building had both cable and DSL, but was not a Novus building. Accordingly, the least expensive plan meeting the above requirements from each provider are (last updated 2021-02-20, headline prices in CAD):

Provider Technology Speed Cap Price
AEBC Cable 25/2.5 none $34.95
Can Com Cable 25/2 none $38.00
CanNet Telecom Cable 75/7.5 none $39.98
CIK Telecom Cable 30/5 none $39.99
Distributel Cable? 25/2.5 none $40.00
DSL? 25/3 none $65.00
HighSpeed Systems Cable 25/2 500GB $19.95
Juce Cable 25/2.5 none $56.95
Lightspeed Cable 30/2.5 none $32.95
DSL 25/3 325GB $34.95
Primus DSL 25/2.5 none $49.95
Shaw Cable 25/2.5 250GB $80.00
Surf Internet Cable/DSL 25/2.5 none $29.99
TekSavvy Cable 30/5 none $54.95
DSL 25/5 none $59.95
Telus DSL 25/5 none $80.00
Uniserve Cable 30/5 none $44.99
DSL 25/5 none $49.99
VancouverInternet.ca Cable 30/5 none $44.95

Since I was not sure what my data usage would be, I opted for an unlimited plan. At the time, Lightspeed was the best deal, but now the least expensive option is Surf Internet. Given the frequent recommendations for Lightspeed, and the good experience I have had so far, I would likley stay with them despite the $3 higher price.

Update 2021-03-15: I moved to a building with Novus and am now trying out their symmetric 1000/1000 service.
